Refresh Massage & Bodywork earns Certified Autism Center designation

Refresh Massage & Bodywork in Mesa, Arizona, has earned Certified Autism Center status through IBCCES after autism and sensory training for client-facing staff. The certification adds to Mesa’s push to be recognized as an Autism Certified City and signals a broader effort to make local services more accessible to autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors.

Why it matters: - The certification is meant to make massage services more comfortable and predictable for autistic and sensory-sensitive clients. - The designation also supports Mesa’s status as an Autism Certified City™, expanding the number of trained local businesses available to residents and visitors. - Clients who avoid services because of sensory or communication concerns may have more options for personalized care.

What happened: - IBCCES awarded Refresh Massage & Bodywork the Certified Autism Center™ designation in Mesa, Arizona. - At least 80% of client-facing staff completed autism and sensory training to earn the certification. - Refresh Massage & Bodywork is a locally owned massage therapy practice focused on personalized, therapeutic care.

The details: - The training is designed to give massage therapists clear, standardized ways to support autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. - Refresh Massage & Bodywork says clients can share preferences or accommodation needs when booking or before an appointment. - Possible accommodations include reduced conversation, changes to lighting or music, scent-free sessions, avoiding aromatherapy, pressure or technique adjustments, and more communication before and during the session. - The practice says each session is tailored to the client’s comfort level, preferences, and goals. - Refresh Massage & Bodywork offers therapeutic, deep tissue, relaxation, sports, prenatal, lymphatic, trigger point, and customized massage services. - The business is featured on the IBCCES Accessibility App, which is free to download. - IBCCES also operates AccessibilityCertified.com and AutismTravel.com, which list certified locations and professionals.

Between the lines: - The certification reflects a broader shift in service businesses toward disability access as a practical operating standard, not just a customer-service extra. - IBCCES is using citywide certification programs to build networks of autism-trained businesses across healthcare, hospitality, education, recreation, and public safety. - For a service like massage therapy, where touch, sound, lighting, and conversation can all affect the experience, standardized training can reduce uncertainty for staff and clients alike.

What's next: - Refresh Massage & Bodywork is likely to promote its certified status through IBCCES’s accessibility tools and directories. - Mesa’s Autism Certified City effort will depend on continued participation from local organizations across multiple sectors. - IBCCES says its certification model includes ongoing support, continuing learning, onsite reviews, and renewal requirements to sustain the designation.

The bottom line: - Refresh Massage & Bodywork’s certification adds another autism-trained option in Mesa and strengthens the city’s push toward more accessible local services.
